Meet the Co-founders of Journey of the Soul Ministry

Fr. Thomas Lynch and Barbara Mariconda worked together in ministry for many years, creating programs to help people deepen and mature their faith in order to deal with the complexity of today’s world in loving, life-giving ways. They also co-authored their critically acclaimed book titled, “After the Diagnosis…A Guide for Living” which Kirkus called “An expansive, richly sympathetic book about the last and least-understood phase of life.”

What People Are Saying

  • Journey of the Soul Ministry really provides a “how-to” for handling life’s fears and anxieties with calmness and understanding so every day can be lived to its fullest. Fr. Tom and Barbara’s book, “After the Diagnosis…A Guide for Living” taught me the answers to questions that are very difficult to put into words. I wish I had this guide when suffering through past mistakes, burdens and losses. "After the Diagnosis..." is a book to read over and over again.

  • The Journey of the Soul Ministry is a place where people can come and be real – bringing questions and doubts. This community has allowed me to be receptive to a loving rather than a punitive God, to have a real understanding of what it is to know God instead of just knowing about God. It’s challenged me to really see the face of God in others, especially those I don’t really care for. Someone who comes here will almost certainly have a moment where they’ll say – I’ve experienced that, but no one's ever explained it in such a gentle and nurturing way before.

  • I’ve found the JOS message very inspiring and personally helpful. While their book “After the Diagnosis…A Guide for Living” might make you think it is only for those with a serious diagnosis, it is helpful for anyone’s personal growth to face the challenges of life. It is also helpful in building relationships and being supportive of others, especially those who are ill or discouraged.

  • Being a part of the Journey of the Soul Community helped me when I went through an unexpected divorce and was diagnosed with cancer the following year. But it wasn’t until I lost someone precious, and then lost my faith, that I decided I had nothing left to lose. All of my life, I was a “faithful churchgoer,” prayed on my knees every night. I conducted my life by the morals of decency that were instilled by twelve years of Catholic school. Chapter 7 of “After the Diagnosis” on Levels of Faith made me question the way of practicing my religion for over 60 years— I recognized myself, and in some ways, that freed me to find a better way. To me, this book doesn’t necessarily need to be read as written, rather it might be useful as a reference for what you may be seeking at the time, in addition to the legacy you choose to leave behind. Chapter 21, on the subject of Forgiveness, is timeless—suggestions to practice no matter where we may be in our lives.

  • I love a book that can captivate my senses and teach me something profound. I found it in, "After the Diagnosis, A Guide for Living." From page one I was on a unique journey, with a tenderness that made me trust this work and opens my heart to its teachings. Usually, I would shy away from something that made me face my fears, but this book took me by the hand and gently guided me. I was swept up in the story before me and could not wait to read the next page. Nobody wants to think about illness and death, but this book is about life and how we live it. The true stories told by the heroes who lived them, give us a precious perspective that there is an alternative way of looking at our lives on this earth.
